Background of the Study
Inflation, characterized by sustained increases in the general price level of goods and services, significantly impacts consumer purchasing behavior. In developing economies like Nigeria, inflation can erode consumer purchasing power, alter consumption patterns, and shift preferences toward cheaper alternatives (Adeyemi & Ojo, 2023).
In Ibadan, Oyo State, where a significant portion of the population belongs to low and middle-income groups, inflation poses unique challenges. Rising prices for essential commodities often force households to prioritize necessities, reduce discretionary spending, or explore alternative consumption options. While the macroeconomic effects of inflation are well-documented, its specific impact on consumer buying behavior in localized contexts like Ibadan remains underexplored. This study aims to bridge this gap by providing evidence-based insights.
Statement of the Problem
Inflation in Nigeria has been persistent, with significant fluctuations affecting households' purchasing decisions. In Ibadan, consumers face a trade-off between maintaining their standard of living and adapting to rising costs. These adjustments have implications for businesses, as changing consumption patterns may impact demand for various goods and services.
Despite its prevalence, there is limited empirical research examining how inflation directly influences consumer behavior in Ibadan. This knowledge gap hinders policymakers and businesses from designing effective strategies to mitigate adverse effects. This study seeks to analyze the extent to which inflation shapes consumer buying behavior in the region.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of inflation on consumer purchasing power in Ibadan.
2. To examine how inflation influences consumer preferences and spending patterns.
3. To explore strategies businesses can adopt to adapt to inflation-induced changes in consumer behavior.
Research Questions
1. How does inflation affect consumer purchasing power in Ibadan?
2. In what ways does inflation influence consumer preferences and spending behavior?
3. What strategies can businesses use to adapt to changes in consumer behavior caused by inflation?
Research Hypotheses
1. H₀: Inflation does not significantly affect consumer purchasing power in Ibadan.
2. H₀: Inflation does not significantly influence consumer preferences and spending patterns.
3. H₀: Business strategies do not significantly mitigate the impact of inflation on consumer behavior.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on Ibadan, Oyo State, assessing consumer behavior changes over a two-year period. Limitations include the potential for data variability due to external economic factors and reliance on self-reported consumer responses.
